The opinion writer seems to have diagnosed the disease correctly, but is not successful in finding the root cause. The medicine he’s trying to prescribe worked in the past when people were open to reading and to ideas; they appreciated SriSri and others. Now, people are not interested in reading. Some of the reasons are: 1) some observed the failure of communist / marxist philosophies worldwide, even in places where the societies are supposed to be being ruled by them; 2) no cure has been invented yet for the disease of materialism; 3) the visual media has taken over an all important role in everyday life for the common man. When you can view in all gory details of a farmer’s suicide, why would one want to read about it? How is one farmer’s suicide from that of any other?

When it has been made clear in movies over the last four decades that there’s always a power behind any of the murders, govt-issued contracts, scams, marriage alliances involving powerful families, etc., that the common man has no control over, why would a common man be shocked with the unearthing this opinion writer craves for? Or, is it that the common man has become uncommon?

Indians in the US, also have access to cheap labor – but not as cheap as one can get in India. Cleaning services are available. (The undocumented immigrants the US make even cheaper farm labor possible.) Besides that, it is human nature to seek comforts in life. The kings and emperors can afford all the help they can get. Not only the ministers, and IAS officers, but also many officers in India are used to having their employer providing them with not only a car and a house, but also a driver, a housemaid, and a cook. So, it is not that unusual that the Indians posted abroad on Govt mission feel that they are entitled to household help. One of the richest men in the world, Warren Buffet drives his own old car, but that is an exception.
