పాములతో చెలగాటం

పాముని దేవత అని నమ్మేవాళ్లుంటారు. కానీ పాము పామే! భక్తి భావంతో  పుట్టలో చెయ్యి పెట్టిన మనిషిని కూడా అది కాటెయ్యక మానదు.  ఆ పాముని శిక్షించకపోతే- అది మరెందరినో కాటేస్తుంది. కాబట్టి దానికి కోరలు పీకెయ్యాలని అంతా అంటారు. కానీ పుట్టలో చెయ్యి పెట్టినవారి వివేకాన్ని ఏమనాలి?

అసలే మగాడు. ఆపైన డ్రగ్సు. పుట్టలోని పాముకంటే తక్కువదా- సందర్భం?

Lurid gossip adds insult to injury of EFLU rape victim

It wasn’t exactly busi ness as usual at EFLU (English and Foreign Language University) on Monday morning. As if the rape of a student on campus on Friday night wasn’t shocking enough, they now had to deal with insensitive comments and lurid gossip, floating around both online and offline. Much of the debate is centred around the propriety of a girl agreeing to have drinks with boys in a men’s hostel. Online comments ranging from “Studying foreign language doesn’t mean you live in foreign land“ to “There’s no valid reason for a girl to go to men’s hostel at 10 pm. She was asking for trouble…’ have left students on campus angry .“It’s shocking that something like this could happen on campus. She trusted the two men because she knew them. They violated her trust by taking advantage of her and confessed to their crime as well and deserve to be punished by the law,“ fumes a Mass Communication student, adding, “It’s a shame that some people are resorting to victim blaming and character assasination.“

The very nature of this debate reflects the regressive, patriarchal tendencies of our society that comes to the fore in such situations, says filmmaker Nandini Reddy. “Nothing can justify rape. Accepting an invitation for a party doesn’t give a man the right to rape a woman. The problem lies in the mindset of our men and how we raise our male children at home. Women are not men’s property. No amount of education can help solve this issue if they don’t understand this basic fact,“ fumes Nandini.

While there’s a call for strict punishment for the two accused who’ve been arrested, many reckon there is an urgent need for gender sensitization on campus.“We need a gender sensitization committee comprising of students and professors,“ says a PhD scholar who didn’t want to be named.
