Roger Federer: French Connection

Posted in Men in News at 11:11 ఉద. by వసుంధర

Winning the Australian, French, Wimbledon and the US titles is the grand slam of tennis. Many aspire to achieve a career grand slam though grand slam in a calendar year could be their dream. With 13 grand slam titles under his belt, Roger Federer impressed one and all as one of the greatest exponents of tennis. Only the French Championship eluded him, which he clinched recently as his 14th grand slam title to complete a career grand slam. He now equals the highest tally of grand slam titles along with Pete Sampras giving rise to the debate whether he is the greatest among the greatest.
It is difficult to brush aside the likes of Rod Laver while looking for the greatest among the greatest. Laver achieved calendar year grand slams twice. He became a professional after the first achievement and was not allowed to participate in grand slam events. When the ban on professionals was lifted after 4 years, he achieved another calendar year grand slam. Setting aside comparisons between eras, Federer undoubtedly is the greatest among the present crop. His exploits point to his all time great status even without the French connection.

Indian Cricket – phosphorescence to fluorescence

“Stars twinkle in the night, heroes glow as knights”

One billion people and just one eleven required to excel. That is Indian cricket. Yet Amranaths, Mankads, Gavaskars, Vishwanaths, Kapil Devs, etc., come once in lifetime, glorify it and disappear. The team registers occasional wins and then thrives on the past glory. Scientifically this can be termed as phosphorescence. A phosphorescent substance absorbs sunlight to emit it later in the dark. Once we had the highest run-getter and also the highest wicket-taker playing together for the nation. The best innings of the century was attributed to our V.V.S. Lakshman. Yet we were struggling to make it to the top five at the international level until a few years back. Read the rest of this entry »

‘Mubarak’ Barack Obama

‘Freedom is my birth-right’- said Lokamanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak of India while rising his voice against the British Raj during early part of the last century. He was speaking on behalf of all Indians, who were then seemingly united irrespective of caste, language and religion. Present India is a seemingly free country though people still talk of their birth-rights divided on caste, language and religion. And then India, still is a developing country.
